WhatsApp Coexistence, explained for business owners
For years, getting a team onto WhatsApp meant giving up the app your staff already knew. Here is what changed, in plain words, and what did not.
Picture a small shop where the WhatsApp Business app lives on one phone behind the counter. Orders and "is it ready yet?" all arrive there, until two people are off sick and the phone is in someone's bag at home.
Someone suggests the WhatsApp API, so the whole team can answer from a computer. Then comes the catch: connecting the number used to mean it stopped working in the app. WhatsApp Coexistence is Meta's answer to that catch, and this guide explains it without the jargon.
What WhatsApp Coexistence is, in one paragraph
Coexistence lets a business connect the number it already uses in the WhatsApp Business app to the WhatsApp Business Platform (Meta's system for software like a team inbox, automations and the API), without taking it off the app. In Meta's words, the business can send high volumes of messages through the platform while still messaging one to one in the app, and WhatsApp keeps the history in sync between the two. Meta describes it in its guide to onboarding WhatsApp Business app users.
So one number, one business name, two places to work from. Customers notice nothing. They message the same number as always.
The old either-or choice
Before Coexistence, there were two separate worlds:
- The WhatsApp Business app. Free, simple, one phone (plus a few linked devices). Great for a handful of chats a day, awkward for a team.
- The platform (the API). Built for teams and software: shared inboxes, automatic replies, message templates, connections to your other tools. No app on the number.
Meta's Embedded Signup overview says that on the standard route a business phone number is registered for the platform only. Moving up meant moving the number off the app. Many owners stayed on the app for years because of that, even when they had outgrown it.
What you keep and what you add
With Coexistence, your team's daily habits stay put. The app on the phone keeps working. What changes is what sits next to it.
What stays, what arrives
- The app, as beforeStaff keep replying from WhatsApp Business on the phone, the way they do today.
- A shared inboxEveryone you invite sees every conversation on a computer, not just whoever holds the phone.
- Automatic repliesKeyword replies, out-of-hours messages and follow-ups can run while nobody is at the counter.
- Templates and the APIApproved message templates, and sending from your own systems, on the same number.
Replies go both ways. When your team answers from the app, that reply shows up in the web inbox. When someone answers from the inbox or an automation sends a message, it appears in the app's chat too.
On Avox, the inbox side of this is covered in the shared inbox post, and the product page for the feature is WhatsApp Coexistence.
What comes across when you connect
Connecting is a one-time setup run through Meta's own sign-up window, with one step on your phone. During that step you choose whether to share your chat history. Per Meta's documentation:
- Contacts that have a WhatsApp number are synced, and later changes follow.
- If you agree to share history, the platform receives messages from the 180 days before you connected (about six months). Group chats are not included.
- From then on, messages you send from the app arrive on the platform side as well, so a teammate in the web inbox can see what was already said.
That history choice is made once, on the phone, so think about it before tapping. If you want to see every click, the walkthrough in how to connect your WhatsApp Business app to a team inbox goes screen by screen.
What it costs, in Meta's terms
Meta's page says messages sent by the business from the app continue to be free. Messages sent through the platform follow Meta's platform pricing, which depends on the message type and the country you're messaging. We won't quote figures here because Meta changes them, and as of October 2026 the current rates sit on Meta's pricing page. Check it before you plan a campaign.
A platform like Avox charges its own subscription on top. Our pricing page lists the plans.
Who it suits, and who should read the small print first
Coexistence fits you if:
- your team already chats with customers from the app and you don't want to retrain everyone;
- you want more than one person answering, or replies that go out after hours;
- you want to connect orders, bookings or a spreadsheet to WhatsApp later.
Read the limits first if your day depends on features that Meta turns off or doesn't support on a shared number. A few examples: group chats are not synced, disappearing messages and view-once are switched off for one-to-one chats, and broadcast lists become read-only. Meta also expects the app to keep being used, because a number can be disconnected after a long stretch of inactivity on the phone. We've written all of this out in what WhatsApp Coexistence can't do, and it's worth ten minutes before you connect.
Questions people ask
Does my number need to be in the WhatsApp Business app already?
For Coexistence, yes. It's built for a number that is already active in the WhatsApp Business app (not the regular WhatsApp app). Meta also requires the app to be on version 2.24.17 or higher. A brand-new number with no app history can be connected without Coexistence as a platform-only number.
Will customers see a different business name or number?
No. The number and your business name stay as they were, so people keep messaging the same chat.
Can I still use the app after connecting?
Yes, that is the whole point. Keep it signed in on a phone your team really uses, because Meta can disconnect a shared number if the primary phone goes quiet for long enough.
Is this the same as using a second phone or WhatsApp Web?
Not quite. Linked devices are extra screens for the same app. Coexistence connects the number to the platform, which is what lets software such as automations and a team inbox work on it. Note that Meta unlinks any linked devices during the connection, and you can link the supported ones again afterwards.
If this sounds like your shop, the next step is a short one: read the limits article, then connect your number and send yourself a test message from a spare phone.
